UK buyers in Spain for i8 Integral launch
Irizar UK has officially launched the DAF Powered i8 Integral at the biggest customer event ever staged at the company’s Spanish headquarters.
The factory visit by more than 70 coach operators were welcomed to the factory in typical Spanish style before having a hands-on opportunity to see Irizar UK’s all-new, flagship model in the metal, and tour the factory to see how the all-new, class-leading coach is assembled.
Irizar UK has already sold five i8 Integral coaches to operators whose positive experience of the i6 Integral has given them complete confidence in Irizar’s DAF-engined vehicles. Though limited production ‘slots’ are available to the UK market, Irizar UK expects to deliver 20 of the super-high, tri-axle luxury coaches during 2016/17.
“We were thrilled to have been able to show the cream of Britain’s coach operators the i8 Integral and entertain them for two full days,” said Steve O’Neill, Irizar UK’s Commercial Director. “It was a challenge for Irizar UK and our colleagues in Spain, but we hope our guests got to see the financial, technological and emotional investment we have made in the i8, and that this coach is a masterpiece which challenges any coach on the market.”
Two base models
The i8 Integral will be available in the UK in two lengths – 13.2 metres and 14.07 metres – both in tri-axle form and both 3.8-metres in height (3.98 metres including air-con pod). Both models will be fitted with the 13-litre MX13 engine from DAF and, initially, with ZF’s class-leading AS-Tronic automated gearbox. There are two engine power options – 462bhp and 510bhp – and later in the year, the aim is also to supply the 462bhp variant with ZF’s Ecolife automatic gearbox. ZF has now revised this transmission to a rating of 2,400Nm, allowing this to be an option married to the award-winning MX13 engine for the first time.
The i8 Integral introduces a new, luxury weight-saving i8 seat with integral three-point comfort seatbelts and side displacement. The i8 seat is designed specifically to echo the styling cues of the coach, and to complement the new seat, there is a unique range of textiles including iLeather, perforated leather and flat-weave cloth in modern colours.
In terms of luggage space, the i8 Integral offers both capacity and practicality. As an Integral, there is no chassis rail at the rear, so the locker over the axle is uninterrupted for the width of the coach, creating a space perfect for sports equipment such as skis, and for additional water tanks and independent generators.
The i8 Integral is not a ‘grown -up’ i6 but a fully re-engineered, new coach featuring cutting-edge technology as standard. The flat floor allows almost any seating or equipment configuration to be possible, not only matching the needs of operators of sports team coaches, for example, but also ensuring the same coach can be returned to standard seating patterns in its second life in fleets.
Designed for operator, passenger and driver
The three customers for the i8 coach – operators, passengers and drivers – have been the sole focus during the design, the new space frame and internal equipment computer-designed from scratch to eliminate vibration and the possibility of rattles, to deliver a sophisticated, quiet ride and the very best passenger experience. The driver area is, Irizar believes, the best in the market by far, putting all controls in reach where coach drivers told Irizar they wanted them, and offering a central, one-screen MMI (Man-Machine Integration) control as seen in luxury cars.
Above all, the i8 Integral is designed for a long, trouble-free service life so it can deliver maximum profitability. Access to the entire driveline has been made as easy as possible, so that routine servicing is a breeze, and any repairs can be dealt with swiftly, either by DAF’s extensive European dealer network, at Irizar UK appointed service agents, or by Irizar UK’s team of mobile technicians.
“We believe that we now have the UK’s best aftercare service which, as a former coach operator myself, was my aim when we started in 2011,” said Steve. “We live in the real world at Irizar UK, and appreciate that all mechanical devices can fail for any number of reasons. Of course, coach operators want to hear that new vehicles are dependable, but they’d much rather hear that problems are dealt with 24/7, with no compromise and no excuses.”
The i8 Integral has a raft of equipment as standard and, at £295,000 for the 13.2-metre model and £299,000 for the 14-metre coach, comes with 53 seats and 57 seats. But above all, the flat-floor i8 Integral can be fully customised to the operator’s needs.
