Mike Weston to help develop Irizar’s electric bus strategy in the UK
Former Director of Buses at Transport for London, Mike Weston, has joined Irizar UK as Strategic Bus Advisor, as the Spanish-based company starts to swing into full production with its i2e electric bus.
Mike worked at TfL for over 30 years before deciding to leave late last year to pursue consultancy work. He steered the £340 million New Routemaster project and has developed and led the implementation of London’s environmental bus strategy over the past ten years.
He will now be advising Irizar as it pushes forward with plans to roll out the i2e, which has been extensively tested in fleets throughout Europe and in London.
“Indeed, I was heavily involved with bringing in electric buses into London, including those from Irizar,” Mike said. “It’s a great pleasure to be working with Irizar, which is a great organisation and, I believe, has an excellent future in the electric bus market.
“There is a very strong focus on reducing urban pollution globally, and electric buses are now not a concept, but a realistic option for urban city buses. As Irizar steps up production at its new electric bus factory in Spain, I am sure there will be great opportunities for i2e and its other electric bus models.”
Mike has a degree in transport management and planning, and is well-known in the industry internationally, not least for recently being chair of the UITP Bus Committee. He now chairs the Bus Working Group of the UK’s Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership (LowCVP).
“We are extremely pleased to have secured some of Mike’s time, and to be able to take advantage of his huge experience in the area of low-emission city buses,” said Steve O’Neill, a Director of Irizar UK.
“In partnership with its subsidiary technology companies, Irizar has developed a leading-edge electric driveline in the i2e, and his strategic advice will help us present operators and planners with a relevant and cost-effective option.”
“We highly value his support into this new business we are facing, and the whole industry is being challenged. It will bring new opportunities as well as redefine the way transportation is understood in cities”, said Hector Olabe, the Irizar e-mobility Director.
Irizar e-mobility is the Irizar Group’s new company, whose business is focused on offering integral electromobility solutions for vehicles as well as their main components and systems for cities.
It combines the knowledge and experience of all the Group’s companies to create comprehensive urban mobility solutions: 100% electric buses and the major infrastructure systems required for charging, traction and energy storage, all of which are designed and manufactured with the Group’s 100% European technology and with Irizar’s warranty and service quality.
The product range includes 10.8m and 12m city buses, which have been operating since 2014 in various European cities, articulated or bi-articulated buses and other electric vehicles to serve cities.
Irizar e-mobility’s 100% electric, 18m BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) first unit will be ready this year after the durability and reliability testing prior to its distribution to clients. This high-capacity integral vehicle developed entirely by the Group is set to lead the market thanks to its profitability, safety and reliability.
