Irizar Integral a winner at Weardale
Long-established North-East operator Weardale Motor Services has returned to Irizar (UK) for a new tri-axle coach. The 13.2-metre i6 Integral replaces another Irizar which was delivered in 2015.
Director and transport manager Anthony Gibson says the coach was purchased to handle incoming tourist and cruise work. Consequentially, it is equipped to a very high specification.
“It was a must for us to have a large luggage capacity for tourist work without having to worry about going overweight, hence we went for a tri-axle,” Anthony explains.
The coach has a centre toilet, Bosch Actia audio and video entertainment systems, and underseat and aisle carpeting. Driver and guide seats are upholstered in leather.
Externally, the coach has air-horns, additional rear marker lights, tinted windows and anti-chip vinyl.
The new i6 Integral has a powerful DAF MX-13 462 bhp engine driving a ZF AS-Tronic automated manual transmission and follows another i6 Integral which was delivered in May 2018.
Weardale Motor Services is a big fan of DAF engines. “We’ve been established for over 90 years, and historically the Leyland Leopard coach was a mainstay of our fleet,” Anthony explains.
“When DAF took over Leyland, we followed, and have run DAFs since 1991. We do run coaches with other engines, but now we are at Euro 6 we have noticed that the DAF motors do not have the issues with exhaust particle filter regeneration that some other engines do.
“We do all our maintenance in-house, and we also get very good service back-up from DAF, and in the case of the i6 Integral, from Irizar (UK). The Irizar service engineer is a real soldier, and we can call him any time, night or day.”
Weardale Motor Services runs 50 vehicles on a wide range of work including stage services and schools’ contracts. It has a 20-strong front-line coach fleet, and has been run by the Gibson family since its foundation in 1926.
