i-Drive a huge success!
The i-Drive event, staged at Rockingham Speedway racetrack, got coach operators into supercars, on to a skid pan and burning rubber in a Caterham track car, but the stars of the show were the complete line-up of Irizar Integral coaches, which were driven around the iconic track by visitors.
The invitation-only i-Drive event also offered guests the opportunity to bring their own cars and motorcycles for a track day, giving their machines a work-out on the complex inner circuit and up on to the banked bowl of the main circuit. Among cars brought were an, Aston Martin DB9, a growling Audi RS4, a stock Land Rover Discovery, superfast Nissan GT-R and even a ‘stock’ Audi A3 diesel!
“I hope I speak for our customers in saying we had a fabulous day,” said Irizar UK Director Steve O’Neill. “The weather was perfect and the circuit proved the perfect host.”
One of the most popular activities was the GBS Sports Cars ‘drifting’ track on which guests could try their hand at tail-out antics in a Caterham track car. Those more faint-hearted could enjoy a high-speed ride as passenger in either a BMW i8 or Audi R8 supercar. Rockingham also got its skid pan into action, and guests could see what it’s like to lose grip! For those wanting to enjoy the thrills of F1, a simulator was run through the day, with the best performance earning the winner a supercar experience day.
“We deliberately made the event a relaxed affair, with our guests able to choose which activities to enjoy to suit themselves,” said Steve. “The afternoon included an opportunity to drive any of the models we now have in the range, including our new 70-seat i4 Integral and one of two i8 luxury coaches generously loaned by Ellisons and Greys of Ely. Many thanks, also, to Clarkes of London for lending their impressive i8 VIP to the standing display.”
The whole Irizar UK range was represented, including examples of the popular i6 Integral, in 12.9 and 12.2-metre guises, the new i4 Integral 70-seater and the three i8 Integrals. The two i8s available to drive had been accompanied by their very experienced drivers, offering operators the opportunity to hear of their positive experience of taking to the controls of this premium coach.
“I hope all our customers and friends enjoyed themselves,” said Steve. “I know I enjoyed it, as a bit of a petrolhead myself!”
The event was generously supported by Prime Passenger Seating; Alcolock; John Hill Coach Sales; Arthur J Gallagher; Crystal Business Finance; Euro Bus Expo 2016; Masterpart Truck and Bus; Mistral Bus and Coach Finance; Bus & Coach Buyer; and routeone magazine.
The day concluded with a stunning aerobatic display by top pilot Mark Jefferies, who performed incredible manoeuvres in his potent Extra E300 stunt plane. It looked pretty hair-raising from the ground, but if you want to see what Mark saw, looking down on the i-Drive event, just click below to see.
