DAF drives Sim’s Travel to Irizar

Previous very positive experience with the DAF-ZF driveline has led to Sim’s Travel of Eskdale, Cumbria, choosing an Irizar i6 coach to replace an older vehicle on its fleet. This Irizar is the first coach from the leading Spanish manufacturer to join the Sim’s Travel fleet.

The stylish 12.2-metre, 51-seat integral features DAF’s advanced MX11 271 engine, which produces 369 hp and 1600 Nm of torque, driving through a sophisticated ZF EcoLife transmission.

Partner Andrew Sim said: “Half our fleet is DAF-powered now, and we have been using the ZF Ecolife transmission since 2007. In those 10 years we’ve had very good performance from it. We find the DAF engine is an excellent all-round performer combining reliability with good fuel consumption, but the outstanding feature is the excellent back-up that we get from DAF: particularly local dealer Solway DAF in Workington, who are maintaining the vehicle under contract. Parts prices are competitive, too”

The coach is assigned to corporate and tour work: Sim’s Travel runs its own tour programme in addition to providing coaching services for third-party tour operators on domestic and international journeys.

Passenger amenities in the Sim’s Travel Irizar i6 include a twin-monitor DVD player, drinks machine and toilet. The seats have magazine nets, footrests and USB points.

Safety features include AEBS, lane departure warning, and a reversing alarm and camera.

Sim’s Travel plans on keeping the Irizar i6 for 10 years, with a mid-life refurbishment.

Each new coach on the fleet is allocated to a single driver and Andrew Sim said: “The Irizar’s driver was delighted to be getting a new coach with the DAF-ZF driveline. I’ve hardly seen him since we took delivery in June as the coach has been very busy, but we’ve certainly had no complaints.”

Established over a century ago by William Sim, Sims Coaches is based in the English Lake District National Park at a location in the shadow of Scafell Pike. Besides tours, hires and corporate work, the company also runs a wide-reaching programme of days out and excursions.
