A match made in heaven
Crawley-based Turbostyle Coaches says its 12.9-metre i6 Integral has the perfect match of engine and gearbox.
The family-run airport specialist needs the ‘wow’ factor of the i6 and 57 seats on two axles, but also needs a driveline suitable for low-mileage, stop-start operation, so it chose the ZF EcoLife automatic gearbox to marry with the DAF MX11 engine.
“I’m really impressed with this set-up,” said Director of Turbostyle, Phil James. “Away from the lights, it picks up immediately and the gearchanges are smooth. The engine and gearbox really are a perfect match.”
Phil said he’s a convert to Integral build, in which the engine is installed in a factory-built subframe without the need for chassis rails. They’re chalk and cheese, he says.
Turbostyle Coaches has a fleet of 16 vehicles of which the majority are front-line executives. Phil and his wife Lucia – who set the company up in 1985 – have private hire, contracts and regular airport services into London and the south coast.
